The show just lost a lot of its appeal to me after Jimmy who I found to be a really integral character. I tried watching season 3 and got about 9 episodes in before I just turned it off for good. They spent a lot of time building the character up and it's hard to replace something like that midway through the show. I absolutely loved the first two seasons of the show. I just got around to watching BE in the last year. However, they lost focus after that on the actual plot and it lead to the good, but flawed show we got. TL DR: Jimmy dying didnt ruin the show and had to happen for the story to continue to make sense. The lack of episodes made them hyper focused and the narrative is much improved. That is why the 5th season to me is so good. The budget was huge and they lost sight of Nucky's story. There is a reason why the show was cut in it's final season.

Season 4, again while cinematically beautiful and interesting TV, was a bit of a mess. Gyp, while super entertaining, left them with nothing to go off into the next season. All those characters you mentioned were great, but they did very little to advance Nucky's character or his arc. That said, the show was not set up for that fact and it lost its soul along the way. In his last season, anything but death for him would have been forced. Whether it was because of his off screen behavior or not is irrelevant. Jimmy had to die logically to fit the arch they built. She stopped watching after Jimmy died or at least wasn't nearly as interested. I've had this argument with my wife a lot actually. Yeah he was cool but he wasn't the show, and frankly anyone who just hates on or didn't watch everything S3 and beyond missed out on some quality HBO TV. AR, Chalky, Gyp, Harrow/Julia, Gillian, Charlie and Meyer are more than interesting enough for a viewer to forget Jimmy. What I'm saying is that I feel the show made up for anything it lost with Jimmy. If you ask me, three words alone make up for the show losing Jimmy: Giuseppe Colombano Rosetti.

I'm halfway through S5 and loving it-Meyer, Charlie and Benny have grown from cubs to bears, contrast to how Nucky got his own power. S4-yeah I'll concede there wasn't much here other than a pretty interesting dynamic between Narcisse, Purnsley and Chalky and the occasional Al Capone badassery. Also goes to include AR and Joe The Boss (Probably my favorite of all 5 seasons). S3 sets up the rise of the heroin trade, and goes in deep with Meyer and Charlie's early businesses. There's so much more to the show than just Jimmy. This seems to be a narrow minded state of mind (like Van Alden in s1). Anything that features Jimmy Darmody is filled with comments of "The show died with Jimmy, Jimmy was the show, every episode after s2 was terrible, I never watched again after Jimmy died."
